When Insulation Removal & Attic Cleanout Comes First
Insulation removal and attic cleanout is the first step when what is in the attic is causing problems: soaked by a roof leak or hail damage, soiled by rodents or squirrels, smoke-damaged, or packed down by years of storage and service work. New insulation over that only buries it, and a full cleanout lets us seal every leak in the ceiling.
Removal
A high-power vacuum pulls loose fill through a hose to bags outside. Batts are bagged by hand. Old foam is cut or scraped if it must come out.
Vermiculite
Vermiculite, a pebbly gray-brown fill, can contain asbestos. We leave it alone; it should be tested and, if needed, removed by an abatement contractor first.
Find the cause
If the insulation got wet, the roof or attic bypasses need fixing first. If animals got in, the entry points need closing.
Reinsulate
With the attic clear, we seal the ceiling and blow in new insulation to the R-value you choose.
